Sports events on an international scale are considered a means of enhancing global understanding. From my point of view, I only agree with this statement to some extent.

On the one hand, I accept that international sporting events can bring several benefits in terms of fostering cultural exchange. Since athletes and spectators are gathered in the host country, they can have opportunities to interact and communicate with people coming from various backgrounds. Therefore, through cultural exchange, they can gain deeper insights into different cultures around the world; thereby, stereotypes that are linked with these cultures can be reduced, and mutual respect is undoubtedly promoted. Moreover, tournaments can also facilitate the growth of tourism, especially in the host countries. As tourists from all over the world are offered the chance to broaden their horizons through experiencing the local cuisine, traditional crafts, or historical sites, the country can not only preserve its culture, but also its global image is enhanced, making a name for itself.

On the other hand, I still hold the belief that the aforementioned advantages are overshadowed by the drawbacks it presents. The downside that can be mentioned is the rise in competitiveness. Sports are extremely competitive fields that trigger their supporters to behave inappropriately just to protect their countries’ teams. For example, in some scenarios, violent fights or arguments may arise between people because they place an excessive emphasis on winning. Consequently, it causes a chain reaction, leading to sports events losing their core value: the spirit of unity. Secondly, several measures that are worth considering can be implemented to enhance a country's culture rather than through sports events. Such measures include online advertising and social campaigns, which can be really effective in promoting cultural discoveries. Since technology has revolutionised the way individuals access information, governments can utilise the benefits it offers to showcase the richness of their culture.＋

In conclusion, while sports events can contribute to international understanding, I believe that they alone are not sufficient to guarantee harmony in international relationships.
