Introduction

Many schools and universities continue to witness a clear gender imbalance in subject selection, with boys tending to choose science-related disciplines while girls are more likely to study the arts. Although this pattern can largely be explained by social and cultural expectations, I believe it should be changed. Instead, students should be encouraged to choose subjects according to their interests and abilities.

Body

One of the primary reasons for this trend is the influence of social expectations. From an early age, boys are often expected to excel in mathematics, science, and other analytical subjects, whereas girls are encouraged to pursue languages, literature, and the arts. These expectations are frequently reinforced, either consciously or unconsciously, by parents and teachers, who may assume that certain subjects are naturally more suitable for one gender than the other. Consequently, many children suppress their genuine interests and talents in order to conform to these stereotypes. Rather than selecting subjects that reflect their strengths, they make decisions based on society's expectations. Therefore, social stereotypes continue to shape academic choices instead of allowing students to fulfil their true potential.

Another contributing factor is the set of cultural expectations surrounding the future roles of men and women. In many societies, boys and girls are expected to fulfil different family responsibilities as adults, which influences the careers considered appropriate for each gender. These career expectations, in turn, affect the subjects students choose at school. For example, in many Uzbek families, girls are encouraged to become teachers because the profession is believed to offer predictable working hours that can be balanced with future family responsibilities. Boys, by contrast, are often expected to pursue higher-paying careers such as engineering or information technology in order to provide financial support for their families. Consequently, traditional cultural beliefs continue to widen the gender gap in subject selection.

Nevertheless, this tendency should be changed by allowing students to study subjects that genuinely interest them. When individuals are passionate about what they learn, they become more intrinsically motivated and are willing to invest greater time and effort into developing their knowledge and skills. This often results in stronger academic performance, greater professional competence, and higher job satisfaction in the long run. For example, countries such as Japan, the United States, and China have produced many world-leading specialists by enabling talented students to pursue fields that match their interests and abilities rather than social expectations. Consequently, encouraging students to follow their genuine strengths not only benefits individuals but also contributes to greater innovation, expertise, and national competitiveness.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although social and cultural expectations largely explain why boys and girls continue to choose different academic subjects, this trend should be altered. Students should instead be encouraged to make educational choices based on their interests and abilities, as this enables them to reach their full potential while creating a more skilled, innovative, and diverse workforce for society.
