The line graph illustrates the amounts of goods transported by four different kinds of transport in the UK from 1974 to 2002. Overall, it is clear that road witnessed the most widely used mode of transport throughout the period, while both water and pipeline show an overall growth. By contrast, rail fluctuated slightly and was overtaken by water. Regarding road and water, road experienced an upward trend in the quantities of goods transported from around 70 million tonnes in the initial period to about 79 million tonnes, before increasing sharply to approximately 99 million tonnes in 2002. A similar pattern could be seen for water, which illustrates a significant rise in the volumes of goods transported from about 39 million tonnes to around 58 million tonnes in 1982, before dipping slightly to about 51 million tonnes in 1998, then climbing rapidly to nearly 65 million tonnes by the end of the period. Turning to two less-known modes of transportation, there was a gradual increase in the volume of goods transported by pipeline from around 5 million tonnes in 1974 to 21 million tonnes in 1994, then held steady until 2002. Conversely, rail witnessed a slight decline in the quantities of goods transported from roughly 40 million tonnes and reached the bottom at approximately 28 million tonnes in 1994, before recovering moderately to just over 40 million tonnes by the end of the period.
