Essay

The bar chart depicts the divergence and the similarity of the average expenditure of British citizens per month among five categories between 1990 and 2010. Overall, while the expenditure that British people allocated to household utility costs, travelling, food shopping and rent saw an upward trend, that of the expenditure spent on entertaining themselves experienced a steady decrease. It is noteworthy that the average spent per month on paying the rent remained always the highest. Regarding the increasing trends, the expenditure that Britons spent on water, electrical or Internet bills witnessed a remarkable surge between approximately 80 pounds and around 130 pounds from 1990 to 2010. Additionally, there was a moderate growth in the expenditure on transportation from around 180 pounds to 250 pounds, making it the second highest expenditure category. By 1990, approximately 400 pounds can be seen on paying the rent every month, then soared considerably over the next twenty years to peak at 580 pounds in 2010 and was consistently the dominant category. Furthermore, the average monthly spending on groceries experienced a mild decline from over 300 pounds to nearly 350 pounds in the same period. Concerning the downward trend, there was a slight decrease in the average monthly allocating to entertainment dropped around 100 pounds to approximately 80 pounds, reflecting reduced interest in Britain and was always the lowest in all categories.
