Nowadays, the majority of university students are tempted to learn and explore additional subjects other than their main ones while some assume only their main qualification should have all their time and focus. ＋In the following essay, both perspectives will be discussed and my opinion will be expressed.

Firstly, learning different subjects can diversify one’s skill set and also increases the chance of the students being more well-rounded individuals. As a student’s academic horizons are broaden, their ability to think outside the box increases. Thus, they can utilize their creativity and innovation to improve their career prospects. Moreover, by taking elective courses, students may discover their hidden talents and interests. For example, a. medical student may discover a passion for photography that improves their life satisfaction.

On the other hand, university courses themselves are already demanding and challenging, so having to devote time to various courses will gradually lead to becoming burnt-out and incompetent in their main career. The reason is mastery requires deep focus. Therefore, when students’ time and attention are spread onto diverse subjects, they are unlikely to absorb the lessons properly or develop an in-depth understanding which could result in students excelling in none of the subjects. Consequently, these students will be at a disadvantage in job application because employers prioritize expertise. For example, an employer might want to hire an employee with excellent academic backgrounds related to their field like Master or PhD degree rather than someone with a collection of diplomas which are irrelevant to the job.

From my perspective, students’ freedom to explore the world should not be restricted but regulated. Additional courses they choose to study should not be time-consuming and exhausting, so that they could still focus on their major courses while enjoying the learning of a variety of other subjects. Simply put, a perfect balance must be struck between mastering their core curriculum and taking complementary courses.
