The given diagram illustrates how the process of capturing and consuming small prey through the use of digestive enzymes in small and large Venus flytrap happens. Overall, the process can be briefly divided into 2 stages. While both species share an initial trigger mechanism, they diverge significantly in their digestive strategies. In the second stage, small Venus flytraps completely close their snap trap, after which they absorb nutrients from the prey, while large plants only partially close, allowing small insects to escape. In the case of smaller species, regarding the trigger hair response, the process commences when an insect brushes a hair on the leaf of a Venus flytrap, the movement sets off electric charges which stimulate the snap. The process continues as the trap snaps shut, trapping an insect inside. Next, digestive enzymes are secreted, gradually breaking down the prey, after which nutrients are absorbed by the plant. For large Venus flytraps, the initial stage is similar to that of smaller plants. However, in the second stage, the trap does not seal completely because interlocking spines along the leaf margins allow tiny insects to escape, saving the plant the expense of digesting an insufficient meal. Then the trap snaps open and the process recurs from the beginning.
