The two line graphs give information about the shift in UK steal demand and employment in the steel industry over a period of 30 years starting from 1970. Overall, it is clear that the figure for the total UK demand, UK production and employment witnessed a downward trend, while the opposite was true for the data for the import demand. In addition, in the first graph, the total UK demand consistently recorded the highest figure throughout the period. Regarding the data for the total UK demand, in the initial stage, it was the leading category of the first graph, at 200000. Over the 30-year period, although the number of total UK demand decreased substantially to just 100000, it remained topping the first graph. The similar pattern, but to a lesser extent, can be seen in the figure for the UK production, which dramatically declined from about 170000 at the beginning of the period to nearly 80000 in 2000. Turning to the remaining categories, the amount of import demand in UK steel industry stood at around 20000 in 1970, before experiencing a considerable increase to approximately 70000 at the end of the period. By contrast, the number of employees in UK steel industry showed a noticeable decline, from 50000 in 1970 to below 20000 over the next 30 years.
