The diagrams illustrate how a modern landfill for household waste is constructed, used and eventually closed. Overall, the process comprises three main stages. First a lare hole is prepared, household waste is then deposited inside. Finally, the hole is sealed and the gases are released through a separated pipe. During construction, a deep man-made hole is excavated in an area of natural rock. The inside of this space is covered first with a layer of clay and then with synthetic lining, which prevents waste liquid from entering the surrounding area. A series of drainage pipes is installed along the bottom and connected to a drainage tank. When the landfill is in use, trucks deposit household waste into the prepared hole. As the waste accumulated, liquid produced inside flows downwards and enters the drainage pipes. It is then carried into the tank at the base of the landfill. In the final stage, the filled landfill is covered with a thick layer of clay. A vertical pipe is also installed through the waste so that gases can escape safely after the site has been closed.
