The line chart shows the number of telephone subscribers per a thousand residents in Africa from 1994 and 2004. Generally, the number of fixed users was initially higher than its mobile counterpart, but it was later overtaken by the number of mobile subscribers. In addition, the figure for fixed subscribers showed a minor upward trend while mobile users were recorded to have significant increase. As evident, in 1994, the number of fixed subscribers in Africa was much higher than that of mobile ones, 1.7 compared to 0.06. For the following years, the figure for fixed users rose steadily and reached at the same level as mobile subscribers at 2.8 in 2001 which had a remarkable increase from 1999 to 2000. Regarding the remaining years, after converting at one same point with the number of fixed users in 2001, the figure for mobile rocketed to 8.8 per inhabitants in Africa at the end of the survey. On the other hand, the number of fixed users continued its steady rise throughout the period before ending at 3.1 subscribers, much lower than its mobile counterpart.
