＋It is often suggested that young children should start learning a secondary language during their primary school years rather than waiting until secondary school. While this approach can create some difficulties for young pupils and school timetables, I believe the overall benefits are far more significant.

On the one hand, introducing a foreign language as a subject for students from primary school can bring some merits. First and foremost, children can learn faster because they learn fewer subjects in primary school. Normally, children only have to study core subjects such as math and literature, which can help them have more time to acquire new knowledge of a new language. Besides, at this age, the pedagogical methods mainly involve combining knowledge with games, attracting children’s interest and providing an ideal educational environment. Furthermore, research shows that the earlier we learn, the better we can absorb knowledge. The young brain can be more flexible than the older one. Therefore, exposure to a new language at a young age can help children learn it more naturally and effectively.＋However, this approach may have some detrimental effects. One disadvantage is that adding a foreign language to their daily schedule may lead to confusion and stress, as they might still be kids. What is more, primary school children are still mastering their mother tongue. Learning a second language simultaneously can cause language confusion, where children mix up vocabulary or grammar rules between their native language and the new one. This might temporarily delay their reading and writing skills in their primary language.

In conclusion, although early language education can temporarily interfere with native language development and study pressure, the long-term advantages are much greater. Starting a foreign language at primary school gives children a natural advantage that will benefit them throughout their lives.
