Introduction

In recent years, there has been much debate over whether governments should enforce tighter rules on fast food industry to safeguard public health. While such measures could bring certain benefits, I believe the drawbacks are far more significant.

Body

On the one hand, there are some persuasive rationales that support the claim that governments should implement stricter regulations on fast food to improve the diets of citizens. As fast food is highly affordable and convenient, causing excessive accumulation of fats that lead to health problems, ranging from obesity to cardiovascular diseases. If harsher regulations are applied, its consumption may plunge, helping people eat better and avoid health issues. This would relieve a lot of burden on each citizen and the whole healthcare system. Another key rationale is that tighter rules could help consumers have a better choices. Authorities should force these chains display nutritional information directly in menus and warning labels of the products, which would give customers a clear vision about what they are consuming. As a result, consumers are equipped to make informed dietary choices to protect their health.

On the other hand, this measure would have some problematic implications that should receive more attention. Harsh rules can inflict serious damage on the food and beverage sector, especially smaller businesses. This is because the cost of complying with new rules, such as changing recipes or paying additional taxes, is often beyond the reach of local restaurants. eventually forcing many of them to shut down. As a consequence, hundreds of workers, especially low-skilled labourers and students, juggling part-time jobs, would lose the source of income. Another reason is these policies cannot eradicate the root cause of poor public health, which lies in inadequate nutritional education and sedentary lifestyles rather than the mere existence of fast food. Even if these outlets were restricted heavily, individuals can also consume unhealthy diets from other sources. Therefore, investing in school-based nutrition programmes and public awareness campaigns would be a more wiser approach than resorting to blanket restrictions.

Conclusion

In conclusion, despite enhancing transparency and society protection, I am of the opinion that the economic harm caused to small businesses and the failure to address the true causes of unhealthy lifestyles make this policy an ineffective one.
