Introduction

Some individuals believe that children should begin learning a foreign language as soon as they start school, but in contrast, others do not. From my perspective, I partially agree that this could bring plenty of advantages, however, there are always two sides of the same coin. In this essay, I will elaborate the reasons why parents should apply the method of learning language early on to their children as well as the causes to cease doing so.

Body

On one hand, having your children learn a second language will ensure that their future is full of promise. First of all, people working in companies are fully aware that knowing another language helps them benefit. As companies usually work with foreign partners to increase their popularity and build trust within customers, they are always in need of someone bilingual to help with the translation and from that, those who learn a second language could earn even more (money) than they usually do. Due to that, children that learn different languages are likely to become successful in their adulthood. To learn a language when they are young is to have more chance of being fluent in it, which means kids will probably have the opportunity to succeed in the future. Not only that, letting them approach a new language which is not their mother tongue can widen their knowledge of the world. Those language classes obviously teach children four basic skills as well as provide information about the country of that language, supporting children if they ever go onboard or study abroad. Contrary to the fact that many kids love studying another language, some may find it really boring, nevertheless classes allow them to add friends and create activities that help them learn and get together, making learning more appealing. In addition, learning a second language could give them advantages like communicating with foreign tourists, and allowing them to partake in contests that are specified in the language they learn and furthermore. To illustrate, my parents put me in an English class when I was five years old, until now I have known more about English compared with some classmates. I can also help people around me translate words that are in English, and also interact with foreigners.

On the other hand, there are cases where children do not want to participate in language classes. It is very problematic if a kid does not want to study, especially a language but not other subjects as encouraging them to get started is already difficult, let alone forcing them to do so. If parents can encourage kids to study and motivate them in order to spark an interest or keep them going, it would be the best to happen. Unfortunately, it is very possible that nothing would change their mind, since they are very stubborn whenever they try something they detest. So even if parents get them to study, there would not be any improvement due to them not paying attention or putting effort in classes. Simultaneously, they may have a talent for other subjects, then I believe they will grow up disliking the language, which affects the process of learning. It is knowledgeable that forcing yourself to do things you hate seems very uncomfortable, that is exactly what kids also feel when their parents force them to study a certain language that they have developed a dislike for. Spending money on children’s second language class that is not effective would not bring any benefits, even worse that it also brings drawbacks. Likewise, they could be pressured from both school subjects and their second language class, for their main subjects are much more important, they are likely to concentrate more on school subjects, not being able to balance the amount of time being spent on them and their second language, causing them to be too stressed for their age. Take my sister for an example, she is currently just six years old, but forced to study English although she does not like it. She prefers drawing and dancing, whilst being forced to learn a foreign language. It causes her to dislike English, and now whenever she has to go to her extra language class, she always seems distressed. I could not convince her to enter the class, and sometimes saw her losing focus in class, which is not very effective. Regardless, she also appears to put more effort in learning for school.

Conclusion

To summarize, parents who put children in a foreign language class as soon as they can usually make children very invested in that language as they are very curious when learning new things, so it is still advisable that adults make their kids study at a young age, despite some particular cases. In conclusion, I personally think that children should start learning a foreign language as soon as they start school.
