In this day and age, instead of importing overseas foods, many people believe that it is more beneficial for the environment and economy if they consume the local ones. Despite certain concerns surrounding this shift, I contend that its merits are more pronounced.

The chief argument against this is the concern regarding customers’ choices. Some nations having severe weather conditions such as Canada, Russia, or Iceland may not cultivate some tropical vegetables and fruits like bananas, oranges, and durians. Unless people in those countries purchase these kinds of food overseas, they may not have a chance to enjoy multinational cuisines. This limitation not only affects universally commercial development, but also widens the gaps between the nations. Another reason is that many people believe domestic foods are much more economical. However, nurturing unfamiliar foods in inappropriate soil can lead to exorbitant selling prices due to the amount of production, preservation, and employment costs. Instead, massive food production of some developed countries can save money for governments and local businesses, allocating funds to other important developments.＋ However, I contend that the negative consequences of importing foreign foods outstrip its advantages. The main reason for this is the environmental preservation. Consumption of local foods requires a shorter shipping distance, thereby reducing fuel and carbon emission of expensive transportations such as planes, ships, and refrigerated trucks. If the governments and local authorities encourage citizens to place a premium on domestic products, they can ensure their food security without relying heavily on foreign foods. This independence helps them solve alarming global issues, combat climate change, and eradicate health problems, while still contributing to the nation’s economic growth.＋

In conclusion, although importing foods from other countries can bring diverse choices and foster international trade, I firmly believe that the consumption of local products still has sustainable environmental and economical benefits in the long run.
