Introduction

It is widely contended that streaming should be applied in secondary schools. Despite certain advantages of ability grouping, I believe mixed-ability classes offer the optimal learning environment for secondary school students.

Body

Admittedly, educational tracking enables learners to focus on their future objectives. Those aiming for science majors can prioritise chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Likewise, artistically inclined students can devote more time to music theory, learning to play musical instruments, and drawing. While a tailored curriculum is beneficial to a certain extent, it overlooks the fact that children aged 15 or younger usually lack the maturity and self-awareness needed to identify their genuine passions. Major selection at a young age can therefore become counterproductive, as it may be too late for children to change their academic focus when entering high school. For this reason, secondary schools should develop broad syllabi, whereby all subjects are given equal priority to ensure students’ comprehensive knowledge and holistic development.Another argument in favour of academic segregation is that it can stimulate motivation. Students placed in bottom streams may have more motivation to study more diligently to move up to honour classes. While this sounds convincing, the harmful effects on children's self-esteem should not be underestimated. Low-achieving students may consider themselves less intelligent and capable than their peers, which may discourage them from making progress in the long run. Additionally, mixed-ability classes create opportunities for mutual learning. Competent students can be role models who inspire and guide lower-achieving students, contributing to an inclusive learning environment where everyone can acquire knowledge without the labelling effects associated with ability grouping. Educational institutions should promote equality and inclusivity, rather than disparity and segregation by dividing students based on their abilities.

Conclusion

In conclusion, although academic segregation may appear beneficial in terms of tailored lesson plans and maximising students’ potential, it creates more adverse implications. These include unsuitable specialisation, negative impacts on students’ confidence, and prejudices. Schools should remain safe environments conducive to learners’ well-rounded growth and well-being, instead of places where students are rigidly labelled.
