The chart depicts different factors that largely affected UK students' decisions on choosing a university. Overall, three of the listed reasons recorded an increase over time, while the other two factors experienced the opposite trend. Suitable courses maintained their dominance among the reasons, while closeness to the parental home experienced the most substantial rise. In 1995, the percentage of suitable courses was 35%, more than double that of closeness to parental home and quality of teaching, which recorded percentages of 10% and 15% respectively. However, in 2005, closeness to parents' homes rose dramatically, more than doubling its former number to around 22%. Suitable courses and teaching, on the other hand, saw a modest increase to 37% and 18% respectively. Even then, suitable courses still remained the most popular reason among the other ones. Resources and sporting facilities underwent a decrease in their percentages. In 1995, resources accounted for 21%, while the percentage of sporting facilities was 19%. Sporting facilities witnessed a plummet to 6% in 2005, a decline of 13% points. Conversely, resources seemed to suffer a more moderate decline of only 4%, falling from 21% in 1995 to 17% in 2005.
