The two pie charts illustrate the proportion of total expenditure allocated to six categories of goods and services by consumers in a European country in 1958 and 2008. Overall, there was a significant decline in the share of European spending trends as food, clothing or entertainment, while an reverse trend can be seen in the figure for those choose for the other means of commodities and services. In addition, food was the dominant spending category in 1958, a position that was taken over by housing by 2008. The percentage of European consumers' spending on housing accounted for just over a fifth of all spending in 1958, at 22%, after which it saw a significant rise to 32% in 2008. Futhermore, both travel/transport and luxury goods experienced a double increase to reach an equal figure of 17% each, while its stood at only 8% and 7% in 1958, respectively. As a result, the figure for food expenditure dropped steeply from 32% to 12% over the period. The proportion of individuals paying to invest in recreational activities almost halved, ending at 6%. A similar change, but to lower extent, was seen in the figure for clothing, which slipped marginally from 18% in 1958 to 16% in 2008.
