The table illustrates the tax-to-GDP ratio in Sweden,the USA, Korea, Japan and Turkey from 1975 to 2005 Overall, it is evident that while the amount of tax collected in Sweden, USA and Japan increased across the period, the remaining countries namely Korea and Turkey where experienced fluctuations in the tax collected. Notably, Sweden accounted for the overwhelming majority of GDP in 2005, consistently maintaining the leading position throughout the period under review Sweden emerged as the clear market leader in the percentage of tax collected, while this figure was only about half (46 and 47 percent) in the first decade, surging to over half in the second decade, especially recording 70.1 percent in 2005. Although, the amount of tax collected in Japan experienced a moderate increase of 8 percent between 1975 and 1995, significantly exceeded the proportion at 32.1 percent at the end of the period. During the same period, while the USA ranked second of the tax collected at 25.1percent, Korea’s ratio rose sharply in 1985 at 27percent, becoming the second-highest figure.
