Introduction

According to some scientific evidence (research), despite already serving the sentences, offenders still engage in illegal activities after being released. In this essay, I would be likely to explore why this issue is happened before suggesting potential solutions to address it.

Body

There are several reasons that explain why ex-prisoners would be likely to commit crime again after already serving a jail sentence. When offenders are released from prisons, they have to face the discrimination compared to the ordinary employees due to criminal records. This is because employers concern that these individuals can effect adversely on the companies’reputation or even their fortunes. As the result, people who went to prison find difficult to have job opportunities and make a living, leading to acquisitive offending . Moreover, many prisons concentrate solely on harsher punishments instead of offering vocational training. For instance, Prison Policy Initiative in America has published figures indicating that former prisoners face a higher unemployment rate than the general population

To address this concerning, the government intervention in preventing recidivism rate is overlooked. By introducing the laws that forbid employers from discriminating ex-offenders, it may help these people receive equal treatments. The Ban the Box campaign in the US and the UK encourages employers remove questions about criminal records from application forms, allowing these applicants to be assessed based on their performances instead. Also, the government should adopt programs in prisons, offering education and relevant skills such as IT or mechanical expertise which are essential for inmates to find stable jobs. Halden prison in Norway is known for the most humane prison in the world that has implemented these programs;hence, reoffending rate in this country is just about 20% in two years.

Conclusion

In conclusion, some former prisoners re-commit crimes after being released from jail can be caused by discrimination and inadequate rehabilitation in prison. However, by ensuring equal employment opportunities for all ex-offenders and equip them with education and vocational training, the government can considerably reduce recidivism and facilitate them successful reintegration into community.
