One school of thought holds that technological progress contributes to a rise in criminal activity, while others believe that it actually plays a crucial role in crime prevention. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, it is understandable why some individuals think that technological development fuels criminal activities .The major reason is that the proliferation of the internet and digital devices creates more opportunities for criminals to commit offences through identity theft, hacking and online fraud. Because of the flexibility and convenience of digital platforms, most individuals store their personal and financial information online, making them more vulnerable to cyberattacks. By using phishing emails or malicious software, cybercriminals can easily invade victims’ privacy and steal sensitive information. As a result, this not only causes financial losses, but also undermines people’s quality of life .In this sense, technology can be regarded as a facilitator of crime.

On the other hand, I firmly believe that technological progress plays a far greater role in crime prevention. Thanks to the advances in technology, some security measures such as two-factor verification and biometric authentication have been widely adopted to better protect users’ personal information, making unauthorized access more difficult than before ,thereby reducing cybercrime .Beyond the digital world, technology can enhance public security through surveillance systems such as CCTV cameras and facial recognition technology. This not only discourages criminals from committing offences, but also allows law enforcement agencies to identify suspects and solve criminal cases more efficiently.

To conclude, although it is undeniable that technological progress can create more opportunities for cybercriminals to commit offences, I am convinced that the benefits of technology in preventing and combating crime are far more significant.
