AI IELTS Writing Checker: Task 1
Paste your essay to get a band score and feedback on all 4 criteria.
How the AI IELTS Writing checker grades Task 1 and Task 2
This tool grades IELTS Writing answers you write yourself, for both Task 1 and Task 2. Choose the task, paste the question and your answer, then press Check Score. For Academic Task 1, upload the chart, table, map or process diagram from the question: the AI turns the image into a written description of the data, checks your report against it, and lets you correct that description if something was misread. A General Training letter needs no image.
Your answer is marked against the four criteria in the public IELTS Band Descriptors: Task Achievement (Task 1) or Task Response (Task 2), Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy. You get a band for each criterion and an overall band, comments on every criterion, and a list of the spots to fix, each shown in your text with a correction. The band is an estimate for practice, not an official score.
No question to hand? Press Random topic or pick one from the topic bank. You can set a target score, choose the language of the feedback, and re-grade after editing to compare each criterion across the two versions. Before you write, the planning hints break down the question and suggest ideas, vocabulary and sentence patterns.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is Task 1 graded differently from Task 2?
Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range & Accuracy work the same way in both tasks. The first criterion differs: Task 1 checks whether you select and report the key features of the visual accurately (for a letter, whether you cover every bullet point with a clear purpose and a suitable tone), while Task 2 checks whether you answer the question and develop your argument. Task 1 needs at least 150 words and Task 2 at least 250; shorter answers may have their band capped.
Why does Task 1 need the chart image?
To judge whether your description is accurate, the AI has to know what the chart actually shows. The image (JPG, PNG or WebP) is read into a description, and your report is compared with it. If the AI misread the chart, edit the description and re-grade. Questions taken from the topic bank already come with their image.
Is the IELTS Writing checker free?
There is a Free plan with 30 credits a month, shared across Writing, Speaking and Listening/Reading tips; each essay you grade uses credits from that wallet. The Writing plan grades Writing without limits and adds model essays at your target band and handwriting upload. The Pricing page lists what each action costs.
What should I do after grading?
Start with the comments on your lowest criterion, fix the points it flags, then re-grade to see how the scores move. Below the result, the practice suggestions point to the skills worth working on given your scores; once you reach your target, the next step is writing against the clock.
